Spider of Brooklyn Heights
Published in Hardcover by Encore Editions (June, 1967)
Author: Nancy Veglahn
Average review score:

A sentimental novel
I am a simple country boy with little aspirations to live in a city or even visit one. However, one day I shall go to New York City and will visit the Brooklyn Bridge. As a one-time student of architecture, I find this bridge particularly inspiring. Knowing of my interest in the Brooklyn Bridge, a very close friend and native New Yorker, gave me THE SPIDER OF BROOKLYN HEIGHTS as a gift.

Veglahn's work is an historical novel that describes the construction of this impressive landmark. Although it lacks technical details and includes some factual inaccuracies, I love this book! One factual inaccuracy includes her description of the pillars. She has the order of them reversed. Historically, the construction of first pillar was not problematic, the second one was. If the first pillar were as problematic as the second was, the construction would have been halted. Thus, the loss of life and physical damage to the workers (and primary architect) occurred at the point of no return within the depths of the second pillar.

THE SPIDER OF BROOKLYN HEIGHTS offers a sentimental view of the bridge. It is a story of people not primarily of the technological marvel. Despite some inaccuracies, I dearly love this book -- not only for the content, but also for the person who gave it to me.

Easy to read & informative;the other side of the coin
It's been interesting, especially today, the final day of thecongressional impeachment hearings; to be able to look up thesespecific items on this book and of course, the starr report. Objective interpretation, is not as difficult as you would think, if you considered the $MONEY$ involved. Interesting as it may be to some, and equally exciting or disgusting to others, I know in my heart that no REPUBLICAN is going to walk away clean. They have been the ones to force me to lock out news channels (i.e. Fox) because I didn't appreciate my young sons watching cartoons in the afternoon, with newsbreaks busting in with "B*'s" and the like. In order to throw dirt, you must get dirty; the Republicans have wallowed in it for too long and it is obvious they are not concerned with the conduct of the OIC, our opinions, our hard earned dollars, or the supposed conservative people they represent, like me. If you don't like a dog, fine. If the dog is down, don't be seen kicking him. You look worse than that bad dog. Remember folks, someones watching.

Starting and Operating a Business in Washington
Published in Hardcover by Oasis Press (October, 1985)
Authors: Michael D. Jenkins and Ernst & Young
Average review score:

Great Resource for First Time Business Owners
I purchased this book originally to learn more about the details of owning a small business in Washington. However, I find myself using it as a reference book and a guide for helping other people interested in working for themselves. It has several good planning worksheets, questionnaires, and replicas of all the necessary forms you must file in the State of Washington. Most importantly, it helps keep you legal in terms of taxes and reporting requirements. I have recommended this book to several others.

Great source for quick information about state government
At a glance, I was able to view the sources of revenue for the state general fund to answer questions about what role the motor vehicle excise tax (MVET)--the subject of a '99 ballot initiative -- plays in state income. It's a great book to get an overview of how our state works!

The Story of Booker T. Washington (Cornerstones of Freedom)
This was an excellent work overviewing the major achievements of Booker T. Washington. Concentrating on his years at Tuskegee Institute, the authors do a good job portraying Washington's beliefs while explaining the political climate at the time. Washington's critics of the time were also acknowledged and their views represented. The book also explains what a great example Tuskegee Institute and Washington's educational ideas were for others establishing similar institutions.

My son and I read this book this summer for his summer reading program. Not only did my son, who was 7, enjoy the book but I couldn't wait to learn more from our readings. We read the book in two days. I am suggesting this book to his 2nd Grade teacher this year. This is a must to read book!!!

A Side of Booker T. That Most Don't See
Most people who have any familiarity of BTW have heard the oversimplified stereotype that he was supposedly an "Uncle Tom", etc. This shows the fallacy of that thinking. Here, BTW tells off the Governor of South Carolina in 1895 for cutting off funds for Black schools "if you think education is expensive-try ignorance!" and socks it to the Louisiana Legislature for allowing Blacks to be lynched "I heard a boy say "today I have seen a man hanged and I shall soon see one burned. Before I hear such a remark from one of my sons I would rather see him in his grave." read it, and you'll be surprised.

Street Journal: Finding God in the Homeless: Selections from the Notebooks of Gary N. Smith, S.J
Published in Paperback by Sheed and Ward (September, 1993)
Author: Gary N. Smith
Average review score:

The reality of living a life of service
Street Journal is written from the personal diary Father Smith kept while the Director of Nativity House, a daytime drop-in centre for the street people of Tacoma, Washington's skid row. In this inspiring book, he shares personal stories of the people who frequented the centre as well as the day-to-day experiences of staff at Nativity House. For some, like me, who may harbour romanticized notions of working with the poorest of the poor, this book is a real eye-opener. The centre is often frequented by those who are dirty, have lice, are junkies, alcoholics, prostitutes, pimps and ex-convicts or fugitives, some of whom can be mean and/or violent. The depth of love, compassion and empathy that Father Smith and his staff have for these people is felt throughout the book. This is also the story of Father Smith's spiritual growth during this time. He is remarkably candid in describing how his interaction with these people changed not only many of their lives but his as well. Read this book and discover what it means to have a true heart of charity.
